Ebook About A princess is missing and a peace treaty is on the verge of collapse in this new Veronica Speedwell adventure from the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.January 1889. As the newest member of the Curiosity Club--an elite society of brilliant, intrepid women--Veronica Speedwell is excited to put her many skills to good use. As she assembles a memorial exhibition for pioneering mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene, Veronica discovers evidence that the recent death was not a tragic climbing accident but murder. Veronica and her natural historian beau, Stoker, tell the patron of the exhibit, Princess Gisela of Alpenwald, of their findings. With Europe on the verge of war, Gisela's chancellor, Count von Rechstein, does not want to make waves--and before Veronica and Stoker can figure out their next move, the princess disappears.Having noted Veronica's resemblance to the princess, von Rechstein begs her to pose as Gisela for the sake of the peace treaty that brought the princess to England. Veronica reluctantly agrees to the scheme. She and Stoker must work together to keep the treaty intact while navigating unwelcome advances, assassination attempts, and Veronica's own family--the royalty who has never claimed her.Book An Unexpected Peril (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery Book 6) Review :
Let me start out with some important advice: Do not begin reading this book late at night when you have an early meeting the next day. Because you're going to need a LOT of coffee to get through the day. Guess how I know?I fell into the world of Veronica Speedwell -- 1880s adventurer, butterfly hunter, and accidental sleuth -- a few years ago. I would not be the first reader to describe the book series as "a hoot," but honestly it's the best summary. Veronica and her natural historian sidekick Stoker do a damned fine job of getting into scrapes best described as "one damn thing after another" with plot twists that strain (but never break) credulity -- not the least of which is an exceptionally independent woman in Victorian London. Best of all, the characters are themselves marvelous _people_, the sort who are so well drawn that you somehow believe really exist. They aren't marionettes who exist only move a plot forward; they have real human journeys, and they change, and they get better.Certainly that's true of this book in the series, which I think is Raybourn's best yet. The Amazon summary is about all that one can share without spoilers: In preparing an exhibition to honor a woman mountain-climber who fell to her death, Stoker and Veronica discover evidence that suggest the woman was murdered. Veronica winds up standing in for a princess, and... well, really, then the next thing happens, and I won't tell you what that is.There's less "action film" travel hither-and-yon, and not so much Victorian era swashbuckling. Rather, the events transpire (in a manner that seems inevitable) from conversations, and assumptions made-and-discarded, and yes, unexpected perils. The mystery-unfolding is top notch; I kept making guesses along with Victoria, and my guesses were wrong. It's absolutely delightful.A book easily earns 5 stars from me when I stay up late reading, and then I wake up at 5am to _keep_ reading. That was the case, here. _What fun!_I think you do need to start with the first novel, A Curious Beginning, but since all of them are 5-star-worthy that certainly is no hardship. I have purchased all of the Veronica Speedwell books to date. This is the last that I will pre-order. The author is far too enamored of her research in this one, and the story takes nearly a hundred pages to get started. Dialogue does not move the plot forward, merely slows down the pace with sniping and bickering. The exposition becomes tedious and repetitious.
